Communities and Belonging
Ruby and Doris Hodus
Founders of the Brentwood Jewish Center
On August 29, 1958, about 30 people met at the home of Ruby and Doris Hodus to discuss creating a Jewish sanctuary in Brentwood. On September 1, the Brentwood Jewish Center became the chosen name for a conservative congregation meant to serve the community.
Why they matter
Ruby and Doris Hodus represent the household-level work behind religious and civic institutions.
Connection to today
Their story shows how communities are built not only by officials, but by neighbors opening homes, organizing meetings, and creating places of belonging.
